 Śulka in the Rigveda^1 clearly means ‘price.’ In the Dharma
Sūtras^2 it denotes a ‘tax, ’ a sense which is found by Muir^3 in
a passage of the Atharvaveda, ^4 where śukla is read in the
edition with great detriment to the sense. This correction is
accepted by Bloomfield^5 and by Whitney.^6 In another passage
the same change made by Weber^7 is not accepted by Whitney, ^8
and doubtfully by Bloomfield.^9

 घट्टः पन्थाः तत्रआदिना द्रव्यक्रयविक्रयस्थानादौ च यद्देयंदीयतेस शुल्को जगात् इति घटी इति राज इतिच ख्यातः । शलति प्रतिबन्धोऽनेनेति शुल्कः ।शल ज गतौ तालव्यादिः नाम्नीतिकः निपा-तनादत उत्वम् । घट्ट चाले घट्ट्यतेऽत्र इति घञिघट्टः । घट्टो वर्त्मोति माधवी । घट्टो राजग्राह्य-ग्रहणस्थानादिरिति मुकुटः । घट्टो घाट इतिख्याते इति रमानाथः । इति तट्टीकायांभरतः ॥
 (यथा,  मनुः । ८ । ३०७ ।“योऽरक्षन् बलिमादत्ते करं शुल्कञ्च पार्थिवः ।प्रतिभागञ्च दण्डञ्च स सद्यो नरकं व्रजेत् ॥
