Śāṭyāyana, ‘descendant of Śāṭya, ’ is the patronymic of a
teacher mentioned twice in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa^1 and
often in the Jaiminīya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa.^2 In a Vaṃśa
(list of teachers) in the latter work^3 he is called a pupil of
Jvālāyana, while in the Vaṃśa at the end of the Sāmavidhāna
Brāhmaṇa he appears as a pupil of Bādarāyaṇa. The Śāṭyā-
yanins, his followers, are frequently mentioned in the Sūtras, ^4
the Śāṭyāyani Brāhmaṇa^5 and the Śāṭyāyanaka^6 being also
referred to in them. It has been shown by Oertel^7 that this
Brāhmaṇa bore a close resemblance to, and probably belonged
to the same period as, the Jaiminīya Brāhmaṇa.

 प्रकृतकर्म्मवैगुण्यप्रशमनाथहोमः ।यथा । यत्तु प्रकृतकर्म्मवैगुण्यप्रशमनाय शाट्या-यनहोमाभिधानं भवदेवभट्टसम्मतं तन्न प्रामा-णिकं तस्मादपि महाप्रामाणिकैर्भट्टनारायण-चरणैर्गोभिलभाष्ये तदप्रमाणीकृतत्वात् ।छन्दोगपरिशिष्टेऽपि प्रायश्चित्तार्थं प्रकारत्रय-मात्रमुक्तम् । यथा, --“यत्र व्याहृतिभिर्होमः प्रायश्चित्तात्मको भवेत् ।चतस्रस्तत्र विज्ञेया स्त्रीपाणिग्रहणे यथा ॥
अपि वाज्ञातमित्येषा प्राजापत्यापि बाहुतिः ।होतव्या त्रिर्व्विकल्पोऽयं प्रायश्चित्तविधिःस्मृतः ॥
”त्रिर्व्विकल्प इत्यनेन कल्पान्तरनिषेधात् गोभि-लीयकर्म्मणि शाट्यायनहोमो न युक्तः । किन्तुव्यस्तसमस्तमहाव्याहृतिभिश्चतसृभिः प्राय-श्चित्तहोमो युक्तः । विशारदप्रभृतयोऽप्येवम् ।शाट्यायनहोमस्य समूलत्वेऽपि शाख्यन्तरीय-त्वम् । इति तिथ्यादितत्त्वम् ॥
