EnglishŚāṭyāyana, ‘descendant of Śāṭya, ’ is the patronymic of a
teacher mentioned twice in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa^1 and
often in the Jaiminīya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa.^2 In a Vaṃśa
(list of teachers) in the latter work^3 he is called a pupil of
Jvālāyana, while in the Vaṃśa at the end of the Sāmavidhāna
Brāhmaṇa he appears as a pupil of Bādarāyaṇa. The Śāṭyā-
yanins, his followers, are frequently mentioned in the Sūtras, ^4
the Śāṭyāyani Brāhmaṇa^5 and the Śāṭyāyanaka^6 being also
referred to in them. It has been shown by Oertel^7 that this
Brāhmaṇa bore a close resemblance to, and probably belonged
to the same period as, the Jaiminīya Brāhmaṇa.
