Śaśayu, ‘pursuing the hare, is the epithet of some animal
(Mṛga) in the Atharvaveda.^1 Zimmer^2 thinks the tiger is
meant, but this is not likely. Roth^3 considers that a bird of
prey is intended, while Whitney, ^4 following the commentator,
renders the word by ‘lurking.’
