the word was originally applied to glosses or comments on the ancient works like the Sūtra works, in which the interpretation of the text was given with examples and counter- examples where necessary: cf. वृत्तौ भाष्ये तथा नामधातुपारायणादिषु
introduc- tory stanza in the Kāśikā.Later on, when many commentary works were written, the word वृत्ति was dif- erentiated from भाष्य, वार्तिक, टीका, चूर्णि, निर्युक्ति, टिप्पणी, पञ्जिका and others, and made applicable to commentary works concerned with the expla- nation of the rules with examples and counter-examples and such statements or arguments as were necessary for the explanation of the rules or the examples and counter examples. In the Vyākara- ṇa-Śāstra the word occurs almost ex- clusively used for the learned Vṛtti on Pāṇini-sūtras by Vāmana and Jayāditya which was given the name Kāśikā Vṛtti

तप्ताङ्गारञ्च तद्भक्ष्यं पानञ्च तप्तमूत्रकम् ।तप्ताङ्गारे च शयनं ताडितो यमकिङ्करैः ॥

Sanskritवृत्ति स्त्री० वृत--क्तिन् । १ वर्त्तने २ स्थितौ ३ विवरणे चमेदि० । करणे क्तिन् ४ जीविकायाम् अमरः । ५ कौशि-कीसात्त्वतीभारत्यारभट्याख्ये नाटकरचनामैदे “शृङ्गारेकौशिकी, वीरे सात्त्वत्यारभटी पुनः । रसे रौद्रे चपीभत्से वृत्तिः सर्वत्र भारती । चतस्रो वृत्तयो ह्येताःसर्वनाढ्यस्य मातृकाः” सा० द० । ६ वेदान्तोक्ते अन्तःकरणादेःपरिणामभेदे च । अन्तःकरणवृत्तिस्यारूपप्रयोजनादिकंवेदा० प० दर्शितं यथा तडागोदकं छिद्रानिर्गत्य यथा कुल्या-त्मना केदारान् प्रविश्य तद्वदेव चतुष्केणाद्याकारं भवतितथा तैजसमप्यन्तःकरणं चक्षुरादि द्वारा घटादिविषय-देशं गत्वा घटादिविषयाकारेण परिणमते स एवपरिणामो वृत्तिरित्युच्यते । अनुमित्यादिस्थले तु अन्मः-करणस्य स वह्न्यादिदेशगमनं वह्यादेश्चक्षुराद्यसन्निक-र्षात्” १प० । इन्द्रियजन्यवृत्तिश्च आवरणभङ्गार्था सम्ब-न्धार्था इति मतद्वैधं यथोक्तं तत्रैव ७ प० । “सा चा-न्तःकरणवृत्तिरावरणाभिभवार्थेत्येकं मतम् तथा हिअविद्योपहितचैतन्यस्य जीवत्वपक्षे थठाढ्यषिष्ठानचैतन्यस्यजीवरूपतया जीवस्य सवेदा घटभानप्रसक्तौ घटाद्यव-च्छिन्नचैतन्यावरकमज्ञानं मूलाविद्यापरतन्त्रमवस्थापदवाच्यमभ्युपगन्तव्यम् । एव सति न सर्वदा घटादेर्भाम-प्रसङ्गः । अनावृतचैतन्तस्यैव भानप्रयोजकत्वात् तस्यचावरणस्य सदातनत्वे कदाचिदपि घटभानं न स्या-दिति तद्भङ्गे वक्तव्ये तद्भङ्गजनकं न चैतन्यमात्रं तद्भा-सकस्य तदनिवर्त्तकत्वास् नापि वृत्त्युपहितचैतन्थं परो-क्षस्थलेऽपि तन्निवृत्त्यापत्तेरिति परोक्षव्यावृत्तवत्तिविशे-पस्य तदुपहितचैतसास्य वा आवरणभञ्जकत्वमित्यावरणामिभवार्धा वृत्तिरित्युच्यते । सम्बन्धार्षा कृत्तिरित्यपरमतम् । तत्राविद्योपाधिकोजीवोऽपरिच्छन्नः स चघटादिप्रदेशे विद्यमानोऽपि घटाद्यपरोक्षवृत्तिविरहदशायांन घटादिमवभासयति घटादिना समं तस्य सम्बन्धा-भावात् तत्तदाकारवृत्तिदशायां तु भासयति तदो सम्य-न्धसत्त्वात” । अतएवोक्तं “बुद्धिवृत्तिचिदाभासौ द्वावेतौव्याप्लुतो घटम् । तत्राज्ञानं धिया नश्येत् आभासात्तुघटः स्फुरेत्” इदञ्च प्रथमताभिप्रायम् अन्तःकरणवृलीनांभेदादिकं पातञ्जलादिदर्शितप्रन्तःकरणशब्दे १९५ पृ० दृश्यम् ।“ब्रह्मण्यज्ञाननाशाय वृत्तिव्याप्तिरपेक्षिता” ये० सा० । विप्रस्यजीविक रूपवृत्तिहरणे दोषो यथा “स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वाब्रह्मवृत्तिं हरेत्तु यः । स कृतघ्न इति ज्ञेयः फलं तत् शृणुभूमिप! । यावन्तोरेणवः सिक्ता विप्राणां नेत्रविन्दुभिः ।तावद्वर्षसहस्रञ्च घृतपाके स तिष्ठति । तप्ताङ्गारश्च तद्-भक्ष्यं पानञ्च तप्तमूत्रकम् । तप्ताङ्गारे च शयनं ता-ड्यते यमकिङ्करैः । तदन्ते च महापापी विष्ठायां जायतेकृमिः । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि देवमानेन भारते । ततोभूमिविहीनश्च प्रजाहीनश्च मानवः । दरिद्रः कृपणीरोगी शूद्रो निन्द्यस्ततः शुचिः” ब्रह्मवै० प्र० ४९ अ० ।
