वन्धुर वन्धुर, अम्, n. (probably con-
nected with rt. बन्ध् and perhaps more properly
written बन्धुर), the seat of a charioteer, the
fore part of a chariot or place at the end of the
shafts, a carriage-seat or driver's box
the frame-
work [cf. हिरण्य-व्°] of a carriage, (the word वन्-
धुरम् occurs frequently in Ved. and is variously
explained by Sāy. as नीड-बन्धनाधार-भूतम्,
उन्नतानत-रूप-बन्धन-काष्ठम्, वेष्टि-
तं सारथेः स्थानम्, सारथ्य्-आश्रय-स्थानम्,
&c.
the car of the Aśvins, which is described as
‘three-wheeled’ as well as triple in other parts of
its construction, is said to be also त्रि-वन्धुर or
त्रि-बन्धुर, i. e. ‘having three poles or pieces
of wood for securing the occupant’ or ‘having a
triple standing-place or seat for the charioteer.’)
—वन्धुरे-ष्ठा, आस्, आस्, अम् (i. e. वन्धुरे,
loc. c. + स्था), Ved. standing or sitting on the
chariot-seat.
