 Lohāyasa,  ‘red metal, ’ is mentioned in the Śatapatha Brāh-
maṇa, ^1 where it is distinguished from Ayas and gold. In the
Jaiminīya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa^2 the contrast is with Kārṣṇā-
yasa,  ‘iron, ’ and in the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa^3 with Kṛṣṇāyasa, 
‘iron.’ ‘Copper’ seems to be meant.
