1. Rauhiṇa is mentioned in the Rigveda^1 and the Athar-
vaveda^2 as a demon foe of Indra's. Hillebrandt^3 is inclined to
see in the word the name of a planet (cf. Rohiṇī), but without
any clear reason.

2. Rauhiṇa (‘born under the Nakṣatra Rohiṇī’) Vāsiṣṭha
(‘descendant of Vasiṣṭha’), is the name of a man in the
Taittirīya Āraṇyaka (i. 12, 5).

 (रोहिणमेव । स्वार्थे अण् ।)दिनस्य नवममुहूर्त्तः । यथा । अत्र पूर्व्वाह्णेश्राद्धमभिधाय रौहिणन्तु न लङ्घयेदित्यभि-धानेन पूर्व्वाह्णश्राद्धस्य सङ्गवात् परो रौहिण-पर्य्यन्तगौणपूर्व्वाह्णकालः प्रतीयते । तेन रौहिणंपूर्व्वाह्णश्राद्धस्य गौणकालत्वेनोत्तरावधिः अप-राह्णश्राद्धस्य पूर्व्वावधिरित्यवगम्यते ततश्चपूर्व्वदिने सङ्गवात् परं रौहिणपर्य्यन्तं तिथे-र्लाभे परदिने मुहूर्त्तत्रयमात्रे तत्तिथिलाभेपूर्व्वदिने श्राद्धम् । रौहिणान्तरूपगौणपूर्व्वाह्ण-लाभात् न परदिने तथात्वाभावात् । उभय-दिने सङ्गवलाभे परदिने शुक्लपक्षे तिथिर्ग्राह्याइति वचनात् । रौहिणन्तु दिवसस्य नवममुहूर्त्तस्तस्य ज्योतिषोक्तरोहिणीदैवतत्वात्रौहिणत्वमिति । इति श्राद्धतत्त्वम् ॥
