German√yam. Zusammenhang mit dam, der durch eine mit dy anlautende Grundform vermittelt wird, ist wahrscheinlich (Ku. Zeitschr. 〔11, 13〕 und Curtius 〔S. 570〕), vielleicht auch mit yu (yuj), sowie mit yat. Der sinnliche Begriff, welcher dieser ganzen Gruppe zu Grunde liegt, ist der der Verbindung zweier Gegenstände, etwa durch ein Seil oder ähnliches. Für unsere Wurzel erscheint als der sinnliche Grundbegriff „(ein Ross) zügeln, bändigen, lenken“ und allgemeiner „durch irgend einen ausgestreckten Gegenstand (wie ein Seil, oder auch den ausgestreckten Arm) etwas in seiner Gewalt halten“
