Ich versuche folgende Deutung aus māṃs (= mā́s gr. μήν u. s. w.) und catú von cat im Sinne des Causativs „verscheuchen,  verschwinden machen“,  also den Mond verscheuchend,  d. h. ihn (durch das Licht der Sonne) verschwinden machend (auch Sāy. führt in der zweiten Erklärung -catu auf cātayate zurück).
