Vedic Reference
EnglishMayu occurs in the list of victims at the Aśvamedha (‘horse
sacrifice’) in the Yajurveda Saṃhitās.^1 The commentator on
the Taittirīya Saṃhitā^1 explains the word as meaning either
an ‘ape’ (kiṃpuruṣa) or a ‘forest peacock’ (āraṇya-mayūra).
The former sense is supported by another passage of the
Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā, ^2 where the Mayu, being a substitute for
the man, must be an ape. This sense also suits the word in
the other passage^3 where it occurs.
1) Taittirīya Saṃhitā, v. 5, 12, 1
Vājasanevi Saṃhitā, xxiv. 31.
