मन्थालव (manthAlava)

Vedic Reference
English
Manthālava, ^1 Mānthīlava^2 are the names in the Yajurveda
Saṃhitās of a victim at the Aśvamedha (‘horse sacrifice’).
What it was is unknown: the commentator Mahīdhara^3 thinks
it was a kind of mouse
Sāyaṇa explains it as a ‘water-cock’
(jala-kukkuṭa). Possiby, if Sāyaṇa's^4 version of the parallel
word Manthāvala is to be trusted, the ‘flying fox’ may be
meant.^5
