Madgu, ‘diver’ (from the root majj, ^1 ‘dive’), is the name of
some aquatic bird which is included in the list of victims at the
Aśvamedha (‘horse sacrifice’) in the Yajurveda Saṃhitās, ^2 and
is occasionally mentioned elsewhere.^3
