Mahabharata
EnglishMaṇi^1, a ṛshi(?). § 270 (Brahmasabhāv.): II, 11, 442 (in the palace of Brahmán).
Maṇi^2, a serpent. § 67 (Sarpasattra): I, 57, 2160 (only B., C. has Maṇiskandhaḥ instead of Maṇiḥ Skandhaḥ).--§ 564 (Mātalīyop.): V, 103, 3626 (ṇāgaḥ, enumeration).
Maṇi^3, a companion of Skanda. § 615u (Skanda): IX, 45, 2534 (together with Sumaṇi M. is given to Skanda by Soma).
पुराणम्
Englishमणि १ / MAṆI I. A serpent born of the family of dhṛtarāṣṭra. This serpent was burnt to death in the sarpasatra of janamejaya. (Śloka 19, Chapter 57, Ādi Parva).
मणि २ / MAṆI II. A sage. This sage was a member of the Brahmasabhā. (Śloka 24, Chapter 11, Sabhā Parva).
मणि ३ / MAṆI III. One of the two Pārṣadas given to subrahmaṇya by candra. The other one was named Sumaṇi. (Śloka 32, Chapter 45, śalya Parva).
मणि ४ / MAṆI IV. A son born to Kaśyapaprajāpati of his wife kadrū. maṇi lived near the city of girivraja. This serpent did penance to please śiva and obtained a boon that garuḍa should give refuge to him. (31: 6, Ādi Parva and brahmāṇḍa purāṇa).
Vedic Reference
EnglishMaṇi is the name in the Rigveda^1 and later^2 of a ‘jewel’ used
as an amulet against all kinds of evil. That either ‘pearl’^3 or
‘diamond’^4 is denoted is not clear.^5 It is evident that the
Maṇi could be strung on a thread (sūtra), which is referred to
in the Pañcaviṃśa Brāhmaṇa^6 and elsewhere
^7 the Maṇi was
certainly also worn round the neck, for in the Rigveda^8 occurs
the epithet maṇi-grīva, ‘having a jewel on the neck.’ An
amulet of Bilva is celebrated in the Śāṅkhāyana Āraṇyaka, ^9
and many varieties of amulet are there enumerated.^10 The
‘jeweller’ (maṇi-kāra) is mentioned in the list of victims at the
Puruṣamedha (‘human sacrifice’) in the Yajurveda.^11
