मंगल / MAṄGALA. A deity in the form of kuja or Planet Mars. There are different versions in the Purāṇas regarding the birth of maṅgala.(1)  satī committed suicide at the Dakṣayāga and śiva greatly griefstricken at the loss of his wife started penance. A sweat drop fell from the forehead of śiva doing severe penance and maṅgala was the son born of that drop. śiva then installed maṅgala among the Navagrahas and according to the science of astrology this Graha is considered the protector of the landed property and the wife of a person. (śiva purāṇa,  rudra saṁhitā 1-10 and skanda purāṇa 4-1-17).(2)  śiva married Vikeśī daughter of hiraṇyākṣa. One day while they were engaged in sexual plays agni came to their presence. Enraged at this the eyes of śiva blazed with anger and a drop of hot water from his eyes fell on the face of Vikeśī and she became pregnant. After some days Vikeśī found it impossible to bear the embryo of śiva thus formed and she aborted it. A child was born and the goddess of earth took it and  fed it with breast milk. It was that child who later on became maṅgala. (skanda purāṇa).(3)  maṅgala was born of the blood drops of śiva. (bhaviṣya purāṇa).(4)  maṅgala was the son of bharadvāja. (Gaṇeśa purāṇa).(5)  maṅgala was the son of Bhūmidevī. devas,  sages,  Brāhmaṇas,  Manus and Gandharvas all worshipped bhūmi at the time of Varāhakalpa. It is also said in the Vedas that Bhūmidevī is the wife of Mahāviṣṇu's incarnation as varāha. maṅgala alias the planet Mars was born to Bhūmidevī of Mahāviṣṇu as varāha. (9th skandha. devī bhāgavata).

शङ्खकोकिलवाद्यानां ध्वनिं शुश्राव मङ्गलम् ।विचित्रं कृष्णसङ्गीतं हरिशब्दं जयध्वनिम् ॥
एवंभूतं शुभं दृष्ट्वा श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टमानसः ।प्रविवेश हरिं स्मृत्वा पुण्यं वृन्दावनं वनम् ॥
”इति ब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते श्रीकृष्णजन्मखण्डे ७० अध्यायः ॥
अन्यच्च ।“लोकेऽस्मिन् मङ्गलान्यष्टौ ब्राह्मणो गौर्हुता-शनः ।हिरण्यं सर्पिरादित्य अपो राजा तथाष्टमः ॥
एतानि शततं पश्येन्नमस्येदर्च्चयेत्ततः ।प्रदक्षिणन्तु कुर्व्वीत तथा चायुर्न हीयते ॥
दूर्व्वा दधि सर्पिरथोदकुम्भंधेनुं सवत्सां वृषभं सुवर्णम् ।मृद्गोमयं स्वस्तिकमक्षतानिलाजा मधु ब्राह्मणकन्यकाश्च ॥
श्वेतानि पुष्पाणि तथा शमीञ्चहुताशनं चन्दनमर्कविम्बम् ।अश्वत्थवृक्षञ्च समालभेतततश्च कुर्य्याद्द्विजजातिधर्म्मम् ॥
”इति मत्स्यसूक्तमहातन्त्रे ४३ पटलः ॥
वर्णभेदे मङ्गलप्रश्नभेदो यथा,  --“ब्राह्मणान् कुशलं पृच्छेत् क्षत्त्रबन्धुमनामयम् ।वैश्यं क्षेमं समागम्य शूद्रमारोग्यमेव तु ॥
”इति कौर्म्मे उपविभागे ११ अध्यायः ॥

 स च रक्तगौरमिश्रितवर्णः । दक्षिण-दिक्पुरुषक्षत्त्रियजातिसामवेदतमोगुणतिक्त-रसमेषराशिप्रबालावन्तिदेशानामधिपतिः ।मेषवाहनः । चतुरङ्गुलप्रमाणः । आरक्तमाल्य-वसनः । भरद्वाजमुनिसन्तानः । चतुर्भुजः ।शक्तिवराभयगदाधारी । सूर्य्याभिमुखः ।अस्याधिदेवता कार्त्तिकेयः । प्रत्यधिदेषतापृथिवी । स तु पित्तप्रकृतिः । युवा । क्रूरः ।वनचारी । मध्याह्नकाले प्रबलः । गैरिकादि-धातुस्वामी । चतुष्पदानां प्रभुः । चतुष्कोणा-कृतिः । सुवर्णकारादीनां स्वामी । ज्वलित-भूमिचारी । किञ्चिदङ्गहीनः । कटुरसप्रियः ।ताम्रवर्णरक्तद्रव्यस्वामी च । इति ग्रहयागतत्त्व-लघुजातकादयः ॥

 अस्योत्पत्तिर्यथा,  --“उपेन्द्रबीजात् पृथ्व्यान्तु मङ्गलः समजायत ।वसुन्धरायां बलवान् तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥
सौतिरुवाच ।उपेन्द्ररूपमालोक्य कामार्त्ता च वसुन्धरा ।विधाय सुन्दरी वेशमक्षता प्रौढयौवना ॥
सस्मिता तस्य तल्पे च सहसा समुपस्थिता ।सुरम्यां मालतीमालां ददौ तस्मै वरानना ॥
उपेन्द्रस्तन्मनो ज्ञात्वा कामी मन्मथपीडितः ।नानाप्रकारशृङ्गारं चकार च तया सह ॥
तदङ्गसङ्गमासक्ता मूर्च्छां प्राप सती तदा ।मृतेव निद्रिता वासौ वीर्य्याधानकृते हरौ ॥
विहाय तत्र रहसि जगाम पुरुषोत्तमः ।उर्व्वशी पथि गच्छन्ती बोधयामास तां मुने ! ॥
सा च पप्रच्छ वृत्तान्तं कथयामास भूश्च ताम् ।वीर्य्यं सम्बरणं कर्त्तुं सा चाशक्ता च दुर्ब्बला ॥
प्रबालस्याकरे त्रस्ता वीय्यन्यासं चकार सा ।तेन प्रबालवर्णश्च कुमारः समजायत ।तेजसा सूर्य्यसदृशो नारायणसुतो महान् ॥
”इति ब्रह्मवैवर्त्तपुराणे,  ९ अध्यायः ॥
अपि च ।“ततोऽङ्गारकलोको हि वसत्यत्र महीसुतः ।उत्पत्तिञ्चास्य वक्ष्यामि यथायं भूसुतोऽभवत् ॥
पुरा हि भ्रमतो विष्णोः स्वेदबिन्दुः पपात ह ।महांस्ततः कुमारोऽसौ लोहिताङ्गो मही-तलात् ॥
जातः स्नेहेन मेदिन्या वर्द्धितः पृथिवीपते ! ।तपसाराध्य ब्रह्माणं ग्रहत्वमुपसेदिवान् ॥
”इति पाद्मे स्वर्गखण्डे ११ अध्यायः ॥
अपरञ्च ।“पुरा दक्षविनाशाय कुपितस्य त्रिशूलिनः ।अपतद्भीमवक्त्रस्य स्वेदबिन्दुर्ललाटजः ॥
भित्त्वा समस्तपातालानदहत् सप्त सागरान् ।अनेकवक्त्रनयनो ज्वलज्ज्वलनभीषणः ॥
वीरभद्र इति ख्यातः करपादायुतैर्युतः ।कृत्वा स यज्ञमथनं पुनर्भूतलसम्भवः ॥
त्रिजगन्निर्द्दहन् भूयः शिवेन विनिवारितः ।कृतं त्वया वीरभद्र ! दक्षयज्ञविनाशनम् ॥
इदानीमलमेतेन लोकदाहेन कर्म्मणा ।शान्तिप्रदानात् सर्व्वेषां ग्रहाणां प्रथमो भव ॥
प्रेक्षिष्यन्ति जनाः पूजां करिष्यन्ति मतं मम ।अङ्गारक इति ख्यातिं गमिष्यसि धरात्मज ! ॥
देवलोके द्वितीयञ्च तव रूपं भविष्यति ।ये च त्वां पूजयिष्यन्ति चतुर्थ्यां त्वद्दिने नराः ।रूपमारोग्यमैश्वर्य्यं तेष्वनन्तं भविष्यति ॥
एवमुक्तस्तदा शान्तिमगमत् कामरूपधृक् ।संजातस्तत्क्षणाद्राजन् ! ग्रहत्वमगमत् पुनः ॥
”इति मत्स्यपुराणे अङ्गारकव्रतं नाम ६८ अः ॥
कल्पभेदे अन्धकासुरवधकाले तस्योत्पत्तिर्यथा, “यो भूम्यां न्यपतद्बिप्र ! स्वेदबिन्दुः शिवान-नात् ।तस्मादङ्गारपुञ्जाभो बालकः समजायत ॥
स बालस्तृषितोऽत्यर्थं पपौ रुधिरमान्धकम् ।कन्या चोत्स्वेदसंजाता सासृग्विलिलिहेऽद्भुता ॥
ततस्तामाह बालार्कप्रभां भैरवमूर्त्तिमान् ।शङ्करो वरदो लोकश्रेयोऽर्थाय वचो महत् ॥
त्वां पूजयिष्यन्ति सुरा ऋषयः पितरस्तथा ।यक्षविद्याधराश्चैव मानवाश्च शुभङ्करि ! ॥
त्वां स्तोष्यन्ति सदा देवि ! वलिपुष्पोत्करैः करैः ।चर्च्चिकेति शुभं नाम यस्माद्रुधिरचर्च्चिता ॥
इत्येवमुक्ता वरदेन चर्च्चिकाभूतानुयाता हरिचर्म्मवासिनी ।महीं समन्ताद्विचचार सुन्दरीस्थलं गता हैङ्गुलमाद्यमुत्तमम् ॥
तस्यां गतायां वरदः कुजस्यप्रादाद्वरं सर्व्ववरोत्तमं यतः ।ग्रहाधिपत्यं जगतः शुभाशुमंभविष्यति त्वद्वशगं महात्मनाम् ॥
इति वामनपुराणे ६७ अध्यायः ॥
अस्य स्तोत्रं यथा,  --“धरणीगर्भसंभूतं विद्युत्पुञ्जसमप्रभम् ।कुमारं शक्तिहस्तञ्च लोहिताङ्गं नमाम्यहम् ॥
”इति व्यासोक्तनवग्रहस्तोत्रान्तर्गतम् ॥
ऋणपरिशोधनार्थस्तोत्रं यथा,  --“मङ्गलो भूमिपुत्त्रश्च ऋणहन्ता धनप्रदः ।स्थिरासनो महाकायः सर्व्वकर्म्माविरोधकः ॥
रोहितो लोहिताक्षश्च सामगानां कृपाकरः ।धरात्मजः कुजो भौमो भूमिजो भूमिनन्दनः ॥
अङ्गारको यमश्चैव सर्व्वरोगापहारकः ।वृष्टिकर्त्ता च हर्त्ता च सर्व्वकामफलप्रदः ॥
एतानि कुजनामानि प्रातरुत्थाय यः पठेत् ।ऋणं न जायते तस्य धनमाप्नोति पुष्कलम् ॥
रक्तपुष्पैश्च गन्धैश्च धूपदीपादिभिस्तथा ।मङ्गलं पूजयेद्भक्त्या मङ्गलेऽहनि सर्व्वदा ॥
ऋणरेखाः प्रकर्त्तव्या अङ्गारेण सदा बुधैः ।प्रोञ्छयेद्वामपादेन ऋणं तस्य विनश्यति ॥
मङ्गलाय नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्ते ऋणहारिणे ।पुत्त्रपौत्त्रप्रदात्रे च मङ्गलाय नमो नमः ॥
ऋणार्थे त्वत्प्रपन्नोऽहमऋणं कुरु मे विभो ! ।एतत् कृत्वा न सन्देहो ऋणं हत्वा धनी भवेत् ।इति स्कन्दपुराणम् ॥

मङ्गलवारे जातस्य फलं यथा,  --“उग्रः प्रतापी क्षितिपालमन्त्रीरणप्रियो वक्रवचाः सरोषः ।सत्त्वान्वितः शूरगणप्रणेताकुजस्य वारे प्रभवो मनुष्यः ॥
