Brāhmaṇāc-chaṃsin (‘reciting after the Brāhmaṇa — i.e.,
Brahman’) is the name of a priest in the Brāhmaṇas.^1 In the
technical division of the sacrificial priests (Ṛtvij) he is classed
with the Brahman, ^2 but it is clear that he was really a Hotraka
or assistant of the Hotṛ.^3 According to Oldenberg, ^4 he was
known to the Rigveda as Brahman. This is denied by
Geldner, ^5 who sees in Brahman merely the ‘superintending
priest’ or the ‘priest.’

 ब्राह्मणे मन्त्रेतरवेदभागे विहि-तानि शस्त्राणि उपचारात् ब्रह्मणानि तानि शंसतिद्वितीयायार्थे पञ्चम्युपसंख्यानम् तस्याः “ब्राह्मणाच्छंसिनउपसंख्यानम्” वार्त्ति० अलुक् । ब्रह्मरूपस्य ऋत्विजःसहकारिणि ऋत्बिग्भेदे अच्छावाकशब्दे ८५ पृ० दृश्यम् ।अत्र कश्चिद्विशेषोऽभिधीयते । षोडर्त्विजां मध्ये प्रधान-भूतान् चतुर उक्त्वा कात्या० श्रौ० ७१८९१० । उक्तं यथा“तत्पुरुषा इतरे यथावेदम्” सू० “इतरे द्वादशर्त्विजोतेषामाद्यानां ब्रह्मादीनां चतुर्णां पुरुषाः आदेशकारि-णोऽनुचराः सेवकाः यथावेदमिति ये यद्वेदविहितस्यकर्मणः कर्त्तारस्ते तत्पुरुषाः यथावेदमिति ये ब्रह्मपुरुषान ज्ञायन्त इति तान् स्वयमेवाह” कर्कः “ब्रह्मणाच्छं-स्यग्नीत्पीतारो ब्रह्मणः” सू० । प्रधानपुरुषवरणेनतद्वशवर्त्तित्वात्तेऽपि वृता एव भवन्ति प्रधानपुरुषे कार्य्या-न्तरासक्तेऽन्यत्र गते वा तदीयं कर्म तत्पुरुषैरेव कर्त्तव्यम्नान्यपुरुषैरिति पुरुषाणामपि पूर्वपूर्वेण करणसम्भवे नो-त्तरेण” । तस्य भावः कर्म वा “होत्राभ्यश्छः” पा० छ ।ब्राह्मणाच्छंसीय तद्भावादा
