EnglishPraty-enas is found with Ugra and Sūta-grāmaṇī in the
Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, ^1 clearly denoting an officer of police.
The sense must be that of the humbler ‘servants’ of the king^2
rather than ‘magistrates, ’ as Max Müller, in his translation,
takes it. In the Kāṭhaka Saṃhitā^3 and the Śāṅkhāyana
Śrauta Sūtra^4 the word means, according to the St. Petersburg
Dictionary, the next heir, who is responsible for the debts of a
dead man.
1) iv. 3, 43. 44 (Mādhyaṃdina = iv. 3,
37. 38 Kāṇva).
2) Böhtlingk's Translation, p. 66,
where he takes ugra as an adjective.
3) viii. 4 (Indische Studien, 3, 463).
4) iv. 16, 16. 17.
