 2. Parṇa denotes the tree Butea frondosa,  later usually called
Palāśa. It occurs in the Rigveda^1 in connexion with the
Aśvattha,  and with that tree as well as the Nyagrodha in the
Atharvaveda, ^2 which mentions both amulets^3 and the cover of
sacrificial dishes^4 as made from its wood. Its use for the
making of sacrificial implements like the ladle (juhū), ^5 or
sacrificial posts, ^6 or the small ladle called sruva, ^7 is mentioned.
The Taittirīya Saṃhitā^8 ascribes its origin to the loss of a
feather by the Gāyatrī when winning the Soma. The tree is
also often mentioned elsewhere.^9 Reference too is sometimes
made to its bark (parṇa-valka).^10

(अदन्तचुरां-परं-सकं-सेट् ।) हरित् पीत-वर्णस्तस्य भावः हारित्यम् । पर्णयति पर्णा-पयति चम्पकम् । इति दुर्गादासः ॥

   (पिपर्त्तीति । पॄ + “धापॄवस्यज्यतिभ्योनः ।” उणां । ३ । ६ । इति नः । यद्वा, पर्णयतीति । पर्ण त् क हारित्ये + अच् ।)पत्रम् । इत्यमरः । २ । ४ । १४ ॥
