पुराणम्
English
परुच्छेप / PARUCCHEPA. A sage of Vedic times who was a Sūktadraṣṭā. He used some sounds too often in his talks.
Nṛmedhas and parucchepa vied with each other in their māntric skill. One day Nṛmedhas in great pride produced smoke from wet firewood without igniting it and then parucchepa produced fire without firewood. Nṛmedhas admitted defeat. (Taittirīya saṁhitā).
Vedic Reference
English
Paruc-chepa is the name of a Ṛṣi to whom the Anukramaṇī
(Index) attributes a series of hymns^1 in the Rigveda, and whose
authorship is asserted in the Aitareya^2 and the Kauṣītaki^3
Brāhmaṇas, as well as in the Nirukta.^4 In the Taittirīya
Saṃhitā^5 he appears as a rival of Nṛmedhas.
1) Rv. i. 127-139.
2) v. 12. 13 (where hymns Rv. i. 128,
129, 130, 133, 135, 137, 139, are at-
tributed to him).
3) xxiii. 4. 5.
4) x. 42.
5) ii. 5, 8, 3.
Cf. Ludwig, Translation of the Rig-
veda, 3, 116. Parucchepa's claim to
authorship is very doubtful.
