पंक्ति / PAṀKTI. A horse which draws the chariot of sūrya. There are seven horses to draw the chariot. The others are gāyatrī,  bṛhatī,  uṣṇik,  jagatī,  Triṣṭubh and Anuṣṭubh. (Chapter 8,  aṁśa 2,  viṣṇu purāṇa).

 Paṅkti,  originally a ‘set of five, ’ denotes as early as the
Rigveda^1 a ‘series’ generally. In the Taittirīya Āraṇyaka^2 the
word is used of the series of a man's ancestors whom he purifies
by certain conduct.

एकशय्यासनं पङ्क्तिर्भाण्डपक्वान्नमिश्रणम् ।याजनाध्यापने योनिस्तथैव सह भोजनम् ॥
सहाध्यायस्तु दशमः सहयाजनमेव च ।एकादश समुद्दिष्टा दोषाः साङ्कर्य्यसङ्गिताः ॥
समीपे चाप्यवस्थानात् पापं संक्रमते नृणां ।तस्मात् सर्व्वप्रयत्नेन साङ्कर्य्यंपरिवर्ज्जयेत्” ॥
