Nai-dāna is a term applied in the Nirukta^1 to a class of
Vedic interpreters. Roth^2 takes the Naidānas to be ‘etymo-
logists, but Sieg^3 thinks they are the same as the Aitihāsikas
or ‘legendarists.’^4
