Nīcya (‘living below’) is a designation of certain nations of
the west. The Nīcyas are mentioned in the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa
(viii. 14) as distinguished from the people of Madhyadeśa, and
no doubt mean the inhabitants of the Indus and Panjab
regions.
