4. one of the six military tactics (गुण q.v.) or courses. According to some, it consists in dividing one’s army and opposing the enemy in parts somewhat after the mode of guerilla warfare, M.vii.160, 173. According to others, it means ‘keeping friendly attitude with all or with two hostile powers, ‘a kind of double-dealing or duplicity.’ See Mall. on Sis.ii.56.

द्वैधीभाव / DVAIDHĪBHĀVA. One of the six qualities, others being Sandhi, vigraha, yāna, āsana, and Saṁśraya. Sandhi is to make peace with the enemy. vigraha is war. The journey to battle is yāna. āsana is, not going for war. dvaidhībhāva is dividing his army into two, i.e. if the army rose against the King, he should bring one party on his side and make the two parties fight with each other. Saṁśraya is to yield to the powerful. (manusmṛti, Chapter 7, Stanza 160).
