Englishदर्भि / DARBHI. An ancient hermit. This hermit built a tīrtha (bath) named Ardhakīla in kurukṣetra. It is believed that anybody who bathed in this place and fasted could learn the mantras (spells and incantations) and become a brāhmaṇa. It occurs in the Purāṇas that the hermit darbhi has brought the four oceans to this bath. (M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 83, Stanza 54).

Sanskritदर्भि ऋषिभेदे अर्द्धकीलाख्यं तीर्थं तेन निर्म्मितं यथाह भा० व० ८३ अ० ।“अर्द्धकीलञ्च तत्रैव तीर्थं कुरुकुलोद्वह” । “विप्रा-णामनुकम्पार्थं दर्भिणा निर्मितं पुरा । व्रतोपनयनाभ्या-ञ्चाप्युपवासेन चाप्युतं । क्रियामन्त्रैश्च संयुक्तो ब्राह्मणःस्थान्न संशयः । क्रियामन्त्रविहीनोऽपि तत्र स्रात्वानरर्षभ! । चीर्णव्रतो भवेद्विद्वान् दृष्टमेतत् पुरातनैः ।समुद्राश्चापि चत्वारः समानीताश्च दर्भिणा । तेषु स्नात्वानरश्रेष्ठ न दुर्गतिमवाप्नुयात् । फलानि गोसहस्राणांचतुर्णां विन्दते तु सः ।
