जिह्व जिह्व, अस्, m. (said to be fr. rt. 1. जि, per-
haps fr. rt. ह्वे
cf. 1. जुहू), the tongue

the tongue or tongues of Agni, i. e. various
forms of flame, (sometimes three are mentioned,
sometimes seven, the names of which are given as fol-
lows: काली, कराली, मनो-जवा, सु-लोहिता, सुधूम्र-
वर्णा, स्फुलिङ्गिनी, विश्व-रूपी
or are identified
with the seven winds, प्र-वह, आ-वह, उद्-वह,
सं-वह, वि-वह, परि-वह, and नि-वह। The
horses of Agni or वह्नयः are said to be सप्त-
जिह्वाः, having seven tongues)
