EnglishJānaka, ‘descendant of Janaka, ’ is the patronymic of
Kratuvid in some MSS. of the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa.^1 In the
Taittirīya Saṃhitā^2 the name appears instead as Kratujit
Jānaki. Jānaka is also, according to some manuscripts of the
Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, ^3 the patronymic of Āyasthūṇa, but
is here no doubt a misreading of Jānaki.
