jahat-svArTA {% f. %} another name of लक्षणलक्षणा which consists in using a word not in its primary sense but in one which has some connection with the primary sense, e.g. गंगायां घोषः (where गंगा loses its primary sense and means गंगातट). Cf. अजहत्स्वार्था.
Abhyankara Grammar

जहत्स्वार्था ( वृत्ति ) a composite ex- pression where the constituent members give up their individual sense. In compound words such as राजपुरुष in the sentence राजपुरुषमा- नय the word राजन् gives up its sense in as much as he, the king, - is not brought
पुरुष also gives up its sense as every man is not brought. It is of course to be noted that although the sense is given up by cach word, it is not completely given up: cf जहदप्यसेो स्वार्थ नात्यन्ताय जहाति

जहत्स्वार्था स्त्री जहत् स्वार्थोयाम् । १ लक्षणाभेदे, यथाआयुर्घृतम् आयुर्घृतमित्यत्र आयुःसाधनस्य बोधनात्स्वार्थस्यायुषस्त्यागात् तथात्वम् । “जहत्स्वार्थाजहत्स्वार्थेद्वे वृत्ती ते पुनस्त्रिधा” हरिका० वैयाकरणभूषणे तुजहति पदानि स्वार्थं यस्यामिति विग्रहो दर्शितः ।
