caMpA {% f. %} Name of an ancient city, the capital of the Angas. (It is identifier with the modern Bhagalpur.)

चंपा / CAṀPĀ. (CAṀPĀPURĪ). A city on the banks of river gaṅgā, caṁpā is often referred to in the Purāṇaś. It was here that lomapāda lived in tretāyuga. (M.B. Vana Parva, Chapter 113, Verse 15). In Dvāparayuga the city was ruled by a sūta called atiratha, who got karṇa, while he and his wife were brooding over their lack of a child. In after years karṇa also ruled the city. (M.B. śānti Parva, Chapter 5, Verse 7).
