Sanskritकार्त्तिकेय कृत्तिकानामपत्यं पाल्यत्वेन ढक् । अग्निनि-षिक्तरुद्रतेजस उत्पन्ने कृत्तिकाभिः पालिते स्कन्दे देवेकार्त्तिकशब्दे तत्कथादि उक्तम् । रामायणेतु संक्षेपेणोक्तंयथा “कुमारश्चाभवत् तत्र तरुणार्कसमद्युतिः । वह्नि-तेजोभवः श्रीमान् गङ्गाकुक्षिपरिच्युतः । तं कुमारंततो जातं दृष्ट्वा सेन्द्रा मरुद्गणाः । तदा क्षीरप्रदानार्थंकृत्तिकाः संन्ययोजयन् । ताः क्षीरं तस्य देवस्य समयेनददुस्तदा । स्यादस्माकमयं पुत्रः ख्यातो नाम्नोति राघव! ।अन्योन्यं पिबतस्तासां तनयस्य मुखानि षट् । समभूवन्महाबाहो! षण्मुखस्तेन विश्रुतः । ततस्तादेवता ऊचुःकार्त्तिकेय इति प्रभुः । पुत्रोऽयं जगति ख्यातो भविष्यतिन संशयः” ।
