4 (In Nyāya phil.). A cause, that which is invariably antecedent to some product and is not otherwise constituted
or, according to Mill, ‘the antecedent or concurrence of antecedents on which the effect is invariably and unconditionally consequent’
according to Naiyāyikas it is of three kinds
(1) समवायि (intimate or inherent)
as threads in the case of cloth
(2) असमवायि (non-intimate or non-inherent), as the conjunction of the threads in the case of cloth
(3) निमित्त (instrumental) as the weaver's loom.

निमित्तम्४ प्रत्ययः ५ । इति जटाधरः ॥
(यथा, विष्णु-पुराणे । १ । १७ । ३० ।“यतः प्रधानपुरुषौ यतश्चैतत् चराचरम् ।कारणं सकलस्यास्य स नो विष्णुः प्रसीदतु” ॥
)कारणत्वमाह । अन्यथासिद्धिशून्यत्वे सति नियत-पूर्व्ववर्त्तित्वम् । तत्रिविधम् । समवायिकारणत्वम्१ असमवायिकारणत्वम् २ निमित्तकारणत्वम् ३परमाणुपरिमाणभिन्नानां कारणत्वम् । इतिभाषापरिच्छेदः । १६-१७ ॥
अणुपरिमाणन्तु नकस्यापि कारणम् । इति सिद्धान्तमुक्तावली(यथा, हेः रामायणे । १ । ६४ । ११ ।“बहुभिः कारणैर्देव ! विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।लोभितः क्रोधितश्चैव तपसा चाभिवर्द्धते” ॥
)करणम् । (कृ वधे + स्वार्थे णिच् भावे ल्युट् ।)बधः । इति मेदिनी ॥
(आदिः । मूलम् । यथा, मनुः । ११ । ८४ ।“ब्राह्मणः सम्भवेनैव देवानामपि दैवतम् ।प्रमाणञ्चैव लोकस्य ब्रह्मात्रैव हि कारणम्” ॥
प्रमाणम् । यथा, मनुः । ८ । २०० ।“सम्भोगो दृश्यते यत्र न दृश्येतागमः क्वचित् ।आगमः कारणं तत्र न सम्भोग इति स्थितिः” ॥
)इन्द्रियम् । (यथा, गीतायाम् । १३ । २० ।“कार्य्यकारणकर्त्तृत्वे हेतुः प्रकृतिरुच्यते ।पुरुषः सुखदुःखानां भोक्तत्वे हेतुरुच्यते” ॥
“कार्य्यं शरीरं कारणानि सुखदुःखसाधनानी-न्द्रियाणि तेषां कर्त्तृत्वे तदाकारपरिणामे” ।इति तट्टीकायां श्रीधरस्वामी ॥
) देहः । (यथा, शाङ्करात्मबोधे । १३ ।“अनाद्यविद्याऽनिर्व्वाच्या कारणोपाधिरुच्यते ।उपाधित्रितयादन्यमात्मानमवधारयेत्” ॥
)साधनम् । (करणमेव स्वार्थे अण् ।) कर्म्म ।(यथा, चाणक्ये । २३ ।“न कश्चित्कस्यचिन्मित्रं न कश्चित्कस्यचित् रिपुः ।कारणेन हि जानाति मित्राणि च रिपूंस्तथा” ॥
)कायस्थः । (करणशब्देऽस्य विशेषो ज्ञेयः ॥
) वाद्य-प्रभेदः । गीतप्रभेदः । इति भरतधृतरत्नकोषः ॥
(आदिकारणत्वात् विष्णुः । यथा महाभारते ।१३ । १४९ । ५४ ।“करणं कारणं कर्त्ता विकर्त्ता गहनो गुहः” ॥
शिवः । यथा शङ्करकृते वेदसारशिवस्तवे ७ ।“अजं शाश्वतं कारणं कारणानाम्शिवं केवलं भासकं भासकानाम्” ॥
