उष्णिह् (उष्णिक्) name of the second of the main seven Vedic metres which are known by the name प्रजापतिच्छन्दस्. The Uṣṇik metre con- sists of 28 syllables divided into three padas of 8, 8 and 12 sylla bles. It has got many varieties such as पुरउष्णिह्, ककुभ् and others

उष्णिह् स्त्री उत्स्निह्यति क्विन् नि० उदोऽन्त्यलेपे षत्वम् । सप्ताक्ष-रपादके १ छन्दोभेदे । स्वादौ कुः उष्णिक् । उष्णिग्भ्याम् ।“गायत्र्युष्णिगनुष्टुप् च वृहती पङ्क्तिरेव च” वृ० र० । “अथछन्दांसि गायत्र्युष्णिगनुष्टुव् वृहती” इत्युपक्रम्य “द्विती-यमुष्णिक् त्रिपदान्त्योद्वादशकः । आद्यश्चेत् पुरौष्णिक्, मध्यमश्चेत् ककुप् । त्रैष्टुभ जागतचतुष्काः ककुब्न्य-ङ्कुशिरैकादशिनोः परः षट्कस्तनुशिराः मध्ये चेत् पिपी-लिका मध्याद्यपञ्चकस्त्रयोऽष्टका अनुष्टुब्गर्भा चतुःसप्तकोष्णिगेव” सर्वानु० ५ अ० । “एवमेवोष्णिहं सवितारंग्रीवास्वनूके” इति सर्वानु० ४ अ० उक्तेः तस्याः सवितृ-देवताकत्वेन ग्रीवासु अनूके च न्यासः । तस्या उप-धानप्रकारः शत० ब्रा० ८, ६, २, ३, आदौ दर्शितंतत एवावसेयः । २ तदभिमानिदेवभेदे च । अश्वमेधे “त्रि-वत्सा अनुष्टुभे तुर्य्यवाह उष्णिहे” यजु० २५, १२१ ।पशुविशेषाणामुक्तदेवताविशेषोद्देशेन यूपादौ बन्धनमुक्तम् ।अस्य हलन्तत्वेऽपि अजादि० टाप् । उष्णिहा “उष्णिहाछन्द इन्द्रियम्” यजु० २१, १३, “वृहत्युष्णिहा ककुप्सूचीभिः शन्त्युत्वा २३, ३३, “शूणातु ग्रीवाः प्र शृणातूष्णिहा वृत्रस्येव शचीपतिः” अथर्ववेदे ६, १३४, १,
