Udra is the name of an animal occurring only in the list of
sacrificial victims at the Aśvamedha given in the Saṃhitās of
the Yajurveda.^1 According to Mahīdhara^2 it was a crab
but
as the commentary on the Taittirīya Saṃhitā^3 calls it a water-
cat, there can be no doubt that it was an otter.
