Vedic Reference
EnglishUttara Madra is the name of a tribe mentioned with the
Uttara Kurus in the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa^1 as living beyond the
Himālaya. Zimmer^2 points out that in the Vaṃśa Brāhmaṇa^3
Kāmboja Aupamanyava is a pupil of Madragāra, and thence
infers that Kambojas and Madras were not far distant in space.
This conclusion is perfectly reasonable in view of the probable
position of the Kāmbojas.^4
