अन्ध्र / ANDHRA (āndhra). This is the andhra Pradesh in modern india. It has to be surmised that this place was very famous during the period of the composition of the mahābhārata. (M.B., bhīṣma parva, Chapter 9, Verse 49).
आन्ध्र / ĀNDHRA. The present āndhra Pradeśa. It was famous even from purāṇic times and it was annexed by sahadeva by defeating its ruler in a game of dice.

 आ + अन्ध--रन् । १ देशभेदे २ तद्देशवासिनि ३ तन्नृपेच ब० व० । “आन्ध्राः शका पुलिन्दाश्च यवनाश्च नराधि-पाः” भा० व० प० १८८ अ० । स च देशः वृ० स० कूर्म्मविभागेआग्नेय्यां दिशि वर्ण्णितः यथा “आग्नेय्यां दिशि को-शलकलिङ्गवङ्गोपवङ्गजठराङ्काः कौणिकविर्दभवत्सान्ध्रचे-दिकाश्चोर्द्धकण्ठाश्च” ग्रहभक्तौ च तत्रैवोक्तम् “द्रविड-विदेहान्ध्रम्लेच्छकभासापुरं कौङ्कणाः समान्ध्रीषकाः । कु-न्तलकेरलदण्डक कान्तिपुरम्लेच्छसङ्करजाः । नासिक्यमोग-वर्द्धनविराटविन्ध्याद्रिपार्श्वगादेशाः । ये च पिबन्ति सुतोयांतापीं ये चापि गोमतीसलिलम्” । तेन विन्ध्याद्रि-पार्श्वगः गीमतीतापीनद्योः सन्निकृष्टोऽयं देश इति गम्यते ।
