Die Grundbedeutung ist „an“, sodass es sich zunächst auf die Begrenzung oder Oberfläche, auf die unmittelbare Nähe bezieht. Daher heisst es als Richtungswort „heran, herbei“ (d. h. sich bis in die unmittelbare Nähe des Redenden bewegend) oder „hinan, hinzu“ (sich bis in die unmittelbare Nähe des vorgestellten Gegenstandes bewegend).
