and there is also the temple of महाकाल in the suburbs. [According to Hemachandra अवन्ति is synonymous with Mālava or the modern Mālavā
but the latter country covered in ancient times, as now, a wider area than Avanti, as Bāṇa applies the name to a neighbouring kingdom in the east, whose capital was Vidiśā on the Vetravatī or Betvā. In the time of the Mahābhārata Avanti appears to have extended on the south to the banks of the Narmadā and on the west probably to the banks of the Myhe or Mahī]

अव + झिच् बाहुलकात् । (पुं.ष.व.) इदमत्र अवधेयम् - अवत्तिशब्दस्य जनपदवाचित्वात् इदन्तत्वाच्च ‘वृद्धेत्कोसलाजादाञ्ञ्यङ् (४.१.१७१) इति ञ्यङ् । ततः ‘आवन्त्यः’ इति रूपम् । बहुवचने तु ‘तद्राजस्य बहुषु तेनैवास्त्रियाम्’ (२.४.६२) इति सूत्रेण ञ्यङः लुक् । ततः ‘अवन्तयः इति रूपम् । १. मालवदेशः २. मालवदेशस्य राजानः । ३. मालवदेशस्य प्रजाः । (स्त्री) प्रागज्योतिषाः कामरूपा मालवाः स्युरवन्तयः - हेमचन्द्रः ४. मालवदेशस्य राजधानी उज्जयिनी । मोक्षदायिकासु पुरीषु अवन्तिः अन्यतमा । ४. नदीविशेषः
