अ-भवन्-मत-योग or अ-भवन्-मत-सम्-
बन्ध, अस्, m. (in rhetoric) a defect in composition
want of harmony between the ideas, which are to be
expressed, and the words by which they are expressed.

अभवन्मतयोग I. Karmadh. m. (-गः) (In Rhetoric.) One of
the twenty one defects to be avoided in the composition of
a sentence (see दोष and वाक्यदोष)
viz. not conveying ac-
curately by a sentence the intended sense,
a. by connecting
syntactically words which have no logical relation to each
other, or
b. by disconnecting syntactically words which are
logically connected, or
c. by erring in the mode of con-
nexion
e. g.
a. in the sentence येषां तास्त्रिदशेभदानसरितः
पीताः प्रतापोष्मभिर्लीलापानभुवश्च चन्दनतरुच्छायासु यैः क-
ल्पिताः येषां हुंकृतयः कृतामरपतिक्षोभाः क्षपाचारिणां किं
तैस्त्वत्परितोषकारि विहितं किंचित्प्रवादोचितम् there is no
logical relation between the words in the relative and those
in the correlative sentence
or in the sentence अनेन च्छि-
न्दता मातुः कण्ठं परशुना तव बद्धस्पर्शः कृपाणोऽयं ल-
ज्जते मम भार्गव, the word परशु, although intended to ex-
press the reason, has no logical connexion with the blame
uttered against Paraśurāma
(thus the old critics: the mo-
dern critics however find no fault with this sentence)
or
b. in the verse या जयश्रीर्मनोजस्य यया जगदलंकृतम् यामे-
णाक्षीं विना प्राणा विफला मे कुतोऽद्य सा, the word एणा-
क्षीम् ought to stand in the correlative sentence so as to
become connected with the three preceding relative sen-
tences which it is not now
(the Sāhityad. proposes to mend
the latter part of this Śloka thus: यां विनामी वृथा प्राणा
एणाक्षी सा कुतोऽद्य मे)
or
c. in the verse ज्योत्स्ना यः
पयःपूरस्तारकाः कैरवाणि राजति व्योमकासारराजहंसः
सुधाकरः, the word कासार standing in the same relation
to व्योम, as पयःपूर to ज्योत्स्ना &c., it ought not to be part
of a compound, as this kind of syntax would affect the
whole simile
or in the sentence ईक्षसे यत्कटाक्षेण तदा धन्वी
मनोभवः the connexion between the two sentences ought
not to have been effected by यद्--तदा, but by चेत्--
तदा. See also अभवन्मतसंबन्ध.
