^1 Absence of a prohibition, non-
prohibition, as of a religious act
e. g. in the Jaimini Sūtra:
अप्रतिषेधो वा दर्शनादिडायां स्यात्. Comp. also पर्युदास.
^2 Absence of negation or contradiction, non-denying (as of
an argument alleged)
e. g. in the Nyāya Sūtras: शब्दार्थ-
व्यवस्थानादप्रतिषेधः
or प्रतिषेधानुपपत्तेश्च प्रतिषेद्धव्याप्रति-
षेधः
or in the Vedānta Sūtra: विज्ञानादिभावे वा तदप्र-
तिषेधः.

e. g. in the Vārttika
to Pāṇ. VIII. 4. 3.: अप्रतिषेधो वा यथा सर्वनामसंज्ञायाम्.
^4 A bad or invalid objection (against an argument), used
frequently in this sense in the Nyāya Sūtras
e. g. गन्धत्वा-
द्यव्यतिरेकाद्गन्धादीनामप्रतिषेधः ‘(what is said before) is an
invalid objection, for odours (scents &c.) have no other
nature than that of odour’.
^5 A useless exception, an ex-
ception which need not have been made
e. g. when Kātyā-
yana criticises the mentioning of the word न्युब्ज in Pāṇini's
rule VII. 3. 61.: न्युब्जेः कर्तृत्वादप्रतिषेधः (Patanjali: अनर्थकः
प्रतिषेधोऽप्रतिषेधः)
or when a successor of Kātyāyana
criticises the latter for finding fault with Pāṇ. VI. 4. 110.,
he says of the प्रतिषेध of Kātyāyana that it is an अप्रतिषेध
and in the same manner he turns into ridicule the criticism
of Kātyāyana on Pāṇ. I. 1. 22.: घसंज्ञायां नदीतरे प्रतिषेधः
by substituting for the latter words नदीतरेऽप्रतिषेधः,
when Patanjali gives the same explanation and Kaiyyaṭa
observes: न प्रतिषेध इति प्रतिषेधनक्रिया नञा निषिध्यते ।
भाष्यकारस्तु वस्त्वर्थं व्याचष्टे.--E. अ neg. and प्रतिषेध.
