^1 Denial, concealment of knowledge.
^2 (In Rhetoric.) A figure of speech, one of the alamkāras
or modes of elegant expression, viz. with two varieties,
each comprising again two subdivisions:
a. a hidden com-
parison, the simile being expressed by way of negation or
denial, and that part of the sentence which contains the ne-
gation or the denial either preceding or following the object
of comparison, e. g. (preceding) नेदं नभोमण्डलमम्बुराशिर्नै-
ताश्च तारा नवफेनभङ्गाः &c.
or (following) एतद्विभाति चर-
माचलचूडचुम्बिहिण्डीरपिण्डरुचिशीतमरीचिबिम्बम् । उज्ज्वा-
लितस्य रजनीं मदनानलस्य धूमं दधत्प्रकटलाञ्छनकैतवेन

वनस्पतिना लता । स्मरसि किं सखि कान्तरतोत्सवं न हि घना-

उप-मेयासत्यकरणपूर्व्वकोपमानसत्यताव्यवस्थापिका-लङ्कृतिः । तस्या लक्षणं ।“प्रकृतं यन्निषिध्यान्यत्साध्यते सा त्वपह्नुतिः” ।उदाहरणं ।“अवाप्तः प्रागल्भ्यं परिणतरुचः शेलतनये ।कलङ्को नैवायं विलसति शशाङ्कस्य वपुषि ॥
अमुष्येयं मन्ये विगलदमृतस्यन्दिशिशिरे ।रतिश्रान्ता शेते रजनिरमणी गाढमुरसि” ॥
इति काव्यप्रकाशः ॥

अपह्नुति स्त्री अप + ह्नु--क्तिन् । १ अपह्नवे “प्रकृतं प्रतिषिध्यान्य-स्थापनं स्यादपह्नुतिरिति” सा० द० उक्ते २ अर्थालङ्कारभेदेच । सा च द्विधा अपह्नवपूर्व्वकः अन्यारोपः, अन्यारोप-पूर्व्वकः अपह्नवश्च यथा “नेदं नभोमण्डलमम्बुराशिर्नैताश्चतारा नवफेनभङ्गाः । नायं शशी कुण्डलितः फणीन्द्रोनासौ कलङ्कः शयितो मुरारिः” ॥
“एतद्विभाति चरमा-चलचूडचुम्बि हिण्डीरपिण्डरुचिशीतमरीचिविम्बम् । उ-ज्ज्वालितस्य रजनीं मदनानलस्य धूमं दधत्प्रकटलाञ्छनकैत-वेन” ॥
“विराजते व्योमवपुः पयोधिस्तारामयास्तत्र चफेनभङ्गाः” । इत्याद्याकारेण प्रकृतनिषेधो बोद्धव्यः ।“गोपनीयं कमप्यर्थं द्योतयित्वा कथञ्चन । यदि श्लेषेणा-न्यया वाऽन्यययेत् साप्यवह्नुतिः” सा० द० तत्र श्लेषेणयथा ॥
“कालेवारिघराणामयतितया नेव शक्यते स्थातुम् ।उत्कण्ठितासि तरले! न हि न हि सखि! पिच्छिलःपत्थाः” ॥
अत्रापतितयेत्यत्र पतिं विनेत्युक्त्वा पतनाभावेने-त्यन्यथाकृतम् । अश्लेषेण यथा । “इह पुरोऽनिलकम्पित-विग्रहा मिलति का न वनस्पतिना लता । स्मरसि किंसखि कान्तरतोत्सवं! न हि घनागमरीतिरुदाहृता” इति ॥
