plicit authority against the correctness of the neuter gender
of this word,  at least at Pāṇini's period

too,  that the restriction,  as regards the Dwigu compounds
the latter part of which is रात्रि,  as द्विरात्रम्,  त्रिरात्रम्

  अपरमह्न एक० त० टच् अह्नादेशः । दिनशेष-भागे स च द्विधा विभक्तस्य,  त्रिधा विभक्तस्य च दिनस्थ शेष-भागः । “पूर्व्वंदिनं मनुष्याणामपराह्णः पितॄणामिति” श्रुतौद्विधा विभजनात् “पूर्व्वाह्णोवै देवानां मध्यन्दिनं मनु-ष्याणामपराह्णः पितॄणामिति श्रुतौ त्रिधा विभजनाच्चतयोस्तेषु वा शेषस्य तथात्वम् । तथा च द्विधा विभक्तस्यदिनस्य शेषार्द्धम्,  त्रिधा विभक्तस्य तृतीयार्द्धं च अप-राह्णः । “ययास्तं सविता याति पितरस्तामुपासते ।तिथिं तेभ्योऽपराह्णो हि स्वयं दत्तः स्वयंभुवेति”स्मृतिः । “तथा श्राद्धस्य पूर्व्वाह्णादपराह्णो विशि-ष्यते” मनुः । पञ्चधा विभक्तस्य तु चतुर्थभागे च तस्यच कर्म्मयोग्येतरापेक्षयाऽपरत्वात् तथात्वम् । अन्ति-मत्रिमुहूर्त्तस्य तु राक्षसवेलात्वेन कर्म्मानर्हत्वात् कर्म्मयोग्य-शेषभागत्वाभावान्नापराह्णत्वम् । तथा च “प्रातःकालो-मुहूर्त्तां स्त्रीन् सङ्गवस्तावदेव तु । मध्याह्नस्त्रिमुहूर्त्तःस्यादप-राह्णस्ततस्तथा । सायाह्नस्त्रिमुहूर्त्तः स्यात् श्राद्धं तत्र नकारयेत् । राक्षसी नाम सा वेला गर्हिता सर्वकर्म्मस्विति”त्रित्रिमुहूर्त्तात्मकतया पञ्चधा विभक्तदिनस्य चतुर्थे भागेकर्म्मार्हापराह्णत्वेन परिभाषणात्तथात्वम् । लौकिके तुमध्याह्नात्परतः,  सूर्य्यास्तात् प्राक्कालोऽपराह्णत्वेनव्यवह्रियते इति” भेदः । ततः भवार्थे वा वुन् अप-राह्णकः तद्भवे त्रि०
