अन्यपदार्थ Tatpur. m. (-र्थः) (In Grammar.) The sense of
another word
this term is used by Pāṇini and his com-
mentators to qualify the nature of a Bahuvrihi compound
which always depends on, or refers to, the meaning of an-
other word, the word अन्यपदार्थ being thus used in contra-
distinction of स्वपदार्थ
e. g. Patanjali: अथान्यग्रहणं किम-
र्थम् । अनेकं पदार्थे । इतीयत्युच्यमाने स्वपदार्थेऽपि बहुव्रीहिः
स्यात् । राजपुरुषः । तक्षपुरुष इति नैतदस्ति प्रयोजनम् । तत्पु-
रुषः स्वपदार्थे बाधको भविष्यति ।
Kaiyyaṭa: अथान्यग्रहण-
मिति । अन्तरङ्गत्वात्स्वपदार्थे समासे सिद्धे पदार्थग्रहणसामर्थ्या-
दन्यपदार्थो लप्स्यत इति प्रश्नः । स्वपदार्थेऽपीति । अपिशब्दा-
दन्यपदार्थेऽपीत्यर्थः । पदार्थग्रहणं व्याप्तिसमाश्रयणार्थं स्या-
दिति स्वपदार्थान्यपदार्थयोः समासः स्यात् । तत्पुरुष इति ।
बहुव्रीहेस्त्वन्यपदार्थोऽवकाशः. [This word occurs only as
a Tatpurusha. The quotation अन्यपदार्थो बहुव्रीहिः which
is printed somewhere, is a misreading for अन्यपदार्थप्रधा-
