अनुदात्त Tatpur. (In Grammar.) 1. m. f. n. (-त्तः-त्ता-त्तम्)
Not elevated, not being pronounced with the accent called
उदात्त (q. v.) or स्वरित (q. v.) (as the syllable of a word).
2. m. (-त्तः) The not elevated accent, the accent (see
स्वर and वाह्यप्रयत्न) which is neither उदात्त (q. v.) nor
स्वरित (q. v.) and which by the depression of the voice, it
requires, prepares, as it were, for the greater effort in the
pronunciation of the syllables accented with the उदात्त or
स्वरित. This depression being the greatest when the syl-
lable having the अनुदात्त accent, is immediately followed
by a syllable accented with the उदात्त or स्वरित, the अनु-
दात्त is called in this case अनुदात्ततर ‘a very anudātta’.
The mode of marking the अनुदात्त, is restricted, as is also
the case with the other two accents, to the vaidik Sanhitās
(Sanhitā-Pāṭhas) and Brāhmaṇas, and varies according to
the different Vedas. In the Sanhitā, Pada and the Brāhmaṇas
of the Ṛgveda, in the Sanhitā and Pada of the Yajur- and
Sanhitā of the Atharvaveda the Anudātta is marked with a
horizontal line under the syllable so accented (thus becoming
comparable also in graphic value to the sign of the Virāma, the
horizontal line representing as it were the repose in accentua-
tion)
in the Brāhmaṇas of the White Yajurveda, it is not
marked at all
and in the Sanhitā of the Sāmaveda the anu-
dātta syllable when anudāttatara before an udātta, or before
a svarita syllable bearing the figures or ३, is marked with
the figure over it, except when it is preceded in the be-
ginning of a verse by other anudātta syllables, in which
case only the first anudātta syllable bears the figure ३,
while the following anudātta syllables are left unmarked.
If the anudāttatara is followed by a svarita syllable bearing
the sign २र, the syllable so accented is marked with ३क.
In the Pada-text of the Sāmaveda the sign denotes the
anudāttatara before an udātta, if the latter occupies the
second syllable from the beginning, or the syllable before
an anudāttatara, if the latter is followed by a svarita, or
lastly the anudātta accentuation of a syllable so marked and
of all the syllables following it until an udātta or svarita
syllable comes
the sign ३क or denotes the anudāttatara
immediately followed by a svarita. Compare also the terms
नीच, निहत, न्यस्त, न्यस्ततर, नियत, निघात, न्यास, नियम
and the radd. हन् with नि and यम् with नि.--In the native
lists of radicals, the Dhātupāthas, certain radicals have the
anudātta accent as an इत् (q. v.) or अनुबन्ध (q. v.) connected
with them i. e. as a technical sign for certain rules they are
subject to with respect to derivation &c. See also अनु-
दात्तेत् and अनुदात्तोपदेश. E. neg. and अनुदात्त.

Abhyankara Grammar
English
अनुदात्त non-udatta, absence of the acute accent
one of the Bāhyapra- yatnas or external efforts to pro- duce sound. This sense possibly refers to a stage or a time when only one accent, the acute or उदात्त was recognized just as in English and other languages at present, This udatta was given to only one vowel in a single word (simple or compound) and all the other vowels were uttered accentless.i.e. अनुदात्त. Possibly with this idea.in view, the standard rule 'अनुदात्तं पदमे- कवर्जम्'* was laid down by Panini. P.VI.1.158. As, however, the syllable, just preceding the accent- ed ( उदात्त ) syllable, was uttered with a very low tone, it was call- ed अनुदात्ततर, while if the syllables succeeding the accented syllable showed a gradual fall in case they happened to be consecutive and more than two, the syllable suc- ceeding the उदात्त was given a mid-way tone, called स्वरितः cf. उदात्तादनुदात्तस्य स्वरितः. Thus, in the utterance of Vedic hymns the practice of three tones उदात्त, अनुदात्त and स्वरित came in vogue and accordingly they are found defined in all the Prātiśākhya and grammar works
cf. उच्चैरुदात्तः, नीचैरनुदात्तः समाहारः स्वरितः P.I.2.29-31, T.Pr.I.38-40, V.Pr.I.108-110, Anudātta is defined by the author of the Kāśi- kāvṛtti as यस्मिन्नुच्चार्यमाणे गात्राणामन्ववसर्गो नाम शिथिलीभवनं भवति, स्वरस्य मृदुता, कण्ठ- विवरस्य उरुता स: अनुदात्तः cf. अन्ववसर्गो मार्दवमुरुता स्वस्येति नीचैःकराणि शब्दस्य M. Bh. on I.2.29, 30. Cf. also उदात्तश्चानुदात्तश्च स्वरितश्च त्रयः स्वराः अायाम- विश्रम्भोक्षपैस्त उच्यन्तेSक्षराश्रयाः R. Pr. III.1. The term anudātta is trans- lated by the word 'grave' as oppo- sed to acute' (udātta, ) and 'circu- mflex' (svarita)
(2) a term appli- ed to such roots as have their vowel अनुदात्त or grave, the chief characteristic of such roots being the non-admission of the augment before an ārdhadhātuka affix placed after them. ( See अनिट्, ).
