अग्निष्वात्त Tatpur. m. pl. (-त्ताः) Demigods or manes to whom
funeral oblations are presented
a sort of manes who when
alive did not maintain their domestic fires nor offer burnt
sacrifices. According to some they live in the Somaloka
and are sons of Marīchi and progenitors especially of the
gods
according to others they are residents of the Virāja-
loka, sons of Pulastya, the manes of the demigods and
demons, and parents of Pīvarī. Also written अग्निस्वात्त.
E. अग्निस्व (अग्नि and स्व) and आत्त (who are obtained by
what belongs or is given to Agni) or अग्निषु (in or by obla-
tions to fire) and आत्त (obtained viz. invoked).

अग्निष्वात्त / AGNIṢVĀTTA. One of the seven pitṛs. The other six pitṛs are: vairāja, Gārhapatya, somapa, ekaśṛṅga, caturveda and kāla. (M.B., Sabhā Parva, Chapter 11, Verses 44, 45 and 46).

ब० व० अग्नितः (श्राद्धीयविप्रकर-रूपानलात् सुष्ठु आत्तं ग्रहणं येषां आद-दा-क्त षत्वमितिबहवः मरीचिपुत्रे पितृगणविशेषे “अग्निष्वा(स्वा)त्ताःवर्हिषदः ऊष्मपा आज्यपास्तथेति” मनुः तैत्ति-रीयब्राह्मणे तु अन्यथा निरुक्तं यथा “अग्निष्वात्ता-नृतुमतो हवामहे नराशंसे सोमपीथं आशुः ।ते नो अर्वन्तः सुहवा भवन्तु शन्नो भवन्तुद्विपदे शं चतुष्पदे” इति “अग्निष्वात्ता अग्निष्वात्त-नामकाः पितरः पितृविशेषाः ते चातुर्मास्यगतपितृ-यज्ञब्राह्मणे स्पष्टमभिहिताः, “ये वा अयज्वानो गृहमेधिनस्वे पितरोऽग्निष्यात्ता” इति मनुष्यजन्मन्यग्निष्टोमादिया-गमकृत्वा स्मार्त्तकर्म्मनिष्ठाः सन्तो मृत्वा पितृत्वं गताः ।तानग्निष्वात्तान्” इति तद्भाष्ये माधवाचार्य्यः
