अंश / AṀŚA. A sage of the family of marīci.1) Genealogy.   He was descended from viṣṇu through brahmā,  marīci and kaśyapa.2) Birth.   marīci was one of the six sons,  all ṛṣis,  of brahmā. These six sons,  born parthogenetically of brahmā,  were: marīci,  aṅgiras,  atri,  pulastya,  pulaha and kratu. marīci had a son named kaśyapa. kaśyapa married the thirteen daughters of dakṣa. The eldest of them,  aditi,  gave birth to twelve sons dhātā,  Aryaman,  mitra,  śakra,  varuṇa,  aṁśa,  bhaga,  vivasvān,  pūṣan,  savitā,  tvaṣṭā and viṣṇu. aṁśa is one of these twelve sons who have been called the twelve Ādityas. (See Chapter 65 of Ādi Parva of the mahābhārata).3) Events.   The mahābhārata says (Śloka 66,  Chapter 123) that aṁśa was present at the time of Arjuna's birth when several devas had come there to see the infant. In Śloka 34,  Chapter 45 of śalya Parva it is said that aṁśa was present on the occasion of the Abhiṣeka of Skandadeva. aṁśa is said to have presented to Skandadeva five good warriors: parigha,  vaṭa,  bhīma,  Dahana and dahati.

  अंश--भावेऽच् । विभागे “सकृदंशो निपतति सकृत्-कन्या प्रदीयते । सकृदाह ददानीति त्रीण्येतानि सकृत्सकृदिति स्मृतिः । कर्म्मणि अच् । विभाज्ये “द्वावंशौप्रतिपद्येत विभजन्नात्मनः पितेति” “द्व्यंशहरोऽर्द्धहरो वापुत्रवित्तार्ज्जनात् पितेति” च स्मृतिः । संख्यासूचकाङ्कविभाज्येतथाङ्के,  च “अन्योन्यहाराभिहतौ हरांशाविति” अंशाहति-श्छेदबधेन भक्तेति” भजेच्छिदोऽंशैरथ तैर्विमिश्रैरितिच लीला० । करणे अच् । अवयवे “अंशुरंशुष्टे देव!सोमाप्यायस्वेति” यजु० । अंशुरंशुः सर्व्वोप्यवयव इति वेद-दीपः । “अंशिनः स्वांशगात्यन्ताभावं प्रति मृषात्मतेति”वेदान्तपरि० । “अंशो नानाव्यपदेशादिति” शारीरकसूत्रम्,  जीवस्य निरवयवब्रह्मावयवत्वाभावमाशङ्क्य भाष्य-कृता अंश इवेति व्याख्यातम् । तत्समानार्थकं “ममैवांशोजीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातन” इति गीतावाक्यम् । “चतु-र्द्दश्यष्टमांशे च क्षीणो भवति चन्द्रमाः अमावास्याष्टमांशेच ततः किल भवेदणुरिति,  स्मृतिः । विशेषावयवे,  राशि-चक्रस्य षष्ट्युत्तरशतत्रयधा विभाजके भागे,  राशेस्त्रिंशद्धाविभाजके अवयवे,  “अक्षस्यांशाः समाख्याताः षष्ट्युत्तर-शतत्रयमिति “क्षेत्रं होरा च द्रेक्काणं नवांशोद्वादशांशकः ।त्रिंशाशश्चेति विज्ञेयः षड्वर्ग इति च ज्योतिषम् नवमितो-ऽंशः (राशेत्रिंशभागः) नवांशः एवं द्वादशांशादयः ।स च अंशः षष्टिकलात्मकः कला तु षष्टिविकलात्मिका ।नवभिर्विभक्ते राशेः त्रिंशात्मके नवांशे च । “द्विभर्त्तृकामेषनवांशके स्यात्” इत्युपक्रम्य “निःस्वा मृगांशे” इति, “विगुणा घटांशे” इति च व्यवहारचमत्कारः । ६,  १, २०३ पा० सू० वृषादिषु पाठात् अस्य आद्युदात्तत्वम् ।
