English
सिद्ध (1) established
the term is used in the sense of नित्य or eternal in the Varttika सिद्धे शब्दार्थसंबन्धे where, as Patanjali has observed, the word सिद्ध meaning नित्य has been purpo- sely put in to mark an auspicious beginning of the शब्दानुशासनशास्त्र which commences with that Var- ttika
cf. माङ्गलिक आचार्यो महतः शास्त्रौघस्य मङ्गलार्थे सिद्धशब्दमादितः प्रयुङ्क्ते M.Bh.on Ahnika 1
(2) established, proved, formed
the word is many times used in this sense in the Maha- bhasya, as also in the Varttikas especially when a reply is to be given to an objection
cf. P.I. 1.3 Vart. 17, I.1. 4. Vart. 6: I. I. 5, Vart.5, I.1.9 Vart. 2 etc.
