Sa-patnī occurs in the Rigveda in the sense of ‘co-wife’
^1 in
the first and the last Maṇḍalas it means co-wife as a ‘rival.’^2 In
post-Vedic Sanskrit the word becomes a synonym for ‘rival.’

”एकपत्नीनामिति एकः पतिर्य्यासामिति ।अत्र सपत्नीपुत्त्रस्य पुत्त्रत्वातिदेशात् तत्सत्त्वे-ऽपि स्त्रीणां सपिण्डनं मैथिलैरुक्तम् । तन्न ।“पुत्त्रेणेव तु कर्त्तव्यं सपिण्डीकरणं स्त्रियाः ।पुरुषस्य पुनस्त्वन्ये भ्रातृपुत्त्रादयोऽपि ये ॥
