Sanskritशुम्भः, दानवविशेषः । स तु गवेष्ठीपुत्त्रःप्रह्णादपौत्त्रः अम्बिकया हतश्च । यथा, --“विरोचनस्तु प्राह्लादिः पञ्च तस्यानुजाः स्मृताःगवेष्ठी कालनेमिश्च जम्भो वास्कल एव च ॥
शम्भुः श्रेष्ठोऽनुजस्तेषां पुत्त्रानेषामतः शृणु ।शुम्भश्चैव निशुम्भश्च विश्वक्सेनो महौजसः ।गवेष्ठिनः सुता ह्येते जम्भस्य सुतदुन्दुभिः ॥
”इत्याद्ये वह्रिपुराणे कस्यपीयप्रजासर्गाध्यायः ॥
अन्यच्च ।पुलस्त्य उवाच ।कश्यपस्य दनुर्न्नाम भार्य्यासीत् द्विजसत्तम ।तस्यास्तु द्वौ सुतावास्तां सहस्राक्षाद्वलाधिकौ ॥
ज्येष्ठः शुम्भ इति ख्यातो निशुन्भश्चापरोऽसुरः ॥
”इति वामनपुराणे ५२ अध्यायः ॥
अपरञ्च ।ऋषिरुवाच ।“निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम् ।हन्यमानं बलञ्चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥
बलावलेपदुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्व्वमावह ।”इत्यादि ॥
“स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः ।अभ्याधवत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया ॥
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्व्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् ।जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि ।स गतासुः पपातोर्व्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः ॥
”इति मार्कण्डेयपुराणे देवीमाहात्मे शुम्भवधः१० अध्यायः ॥

Sanskritशुम्भ शुन्भ--अच् । दानवभेदे । शुम्भश्च प्रह्लादपुत्र-विरोचनात्मजगवेष्ठिनः पुत्रः एकः “विरोचनश्च प्रा-ह्लादिः पञ्च तस्यानुजाः स्मृताः । गवेष्ठी कालनेमिश्चजम्भो वास्कल एव च । शुम्भश्चैव निशुम्भश्च विष्वव्सेनो महौजसः । गवेष्ठिनः सुता ह्येते” वह्निपु० । अप-रश्च “कश्यपस्य दनुर्नाम भार्य्यासीत् द्विजसत्तम! ।तस्यास्तु द्वौ सुतावास्तां सहस्राक्षाद्बलाधिकौ । ज्येष्ठःशुम्भ इति ख्यातो निशुम्भश्चापरोऽसुरः” वामनपु० ।देवीमाहा० अपरोऽपि देव्या निहतः । तदन्योऽपि तत्रैव१२ अ० “शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चैवान्यावुपत्स्येते महासुरौ ।ततस्तौ नाशयिष्यामि विन्ध्याचलनिवासिनी” इत्युक्तः ।
