Vedic Reference
EnglishŚāṅkhāyana as the name of a teacher is not mentioned in
the Kauṣītaki Brāhmaṇa, but it occurs in the Vaṃśa (list of
teachers) at the end of the Śāṅkhāyana Āraṇyaka, ^1 where
Guṇākhya is given as the authority for that work. In the
Śrauta Sūtras^2 the name of Śāṅkhāyana never occurs, but the
Gṛhya Sūtras^3 seem to recognize as teacher Suyajña Śāṅkhā-
yana. In later times^4 the school flourished in Northern
Gujarat. Śāṅkhāyana appears in the Taittirīya Prātiśākhya^5
along with Kāṇḍamāyana.

(Sacred Books of the East, xxix. 4, 5)
that Guṇākhya is intended as the
author of the Sūtras is quite unneces-
