अस्या अध्यात्माधिभूताधिदैवतानि यथा, --“अध्यात्मं बुद्धिरित्याहुः षडिन्द्रियविचारिणी ।अधिभूतञ्च मन्तव्यं ब्रह्मा तत्राधिदैवतम् ॥
”इति महाभारते आश्वमेधिकपर्व्व ॥

सा च सात्त्विकराजसतामसभेदेन त्रिविधा ।सात्त्विकी यथा, --“प्रवृत्तिञ्च निवृत्तिञ्च कार्य्याकार्य्ये भयाभये ।बन्धं मोक्षञ्च या वेत्ति बुद्धिः सा पार्थ !सात्त्विकी ॥
”राजसी यथा, --“यथा धर्म्ममधर्म्मञ्च कार्य्यञ्चाकार्य्यमेव च ।अयथावत् प्रजानाति बुद्धिः सा पार्थ !राजसी ॥
”तामसी यथा, --“अधर्म्मं धर्म्ममिति या मन्यते तमसावृता ।सर्व्वार्थान् विपरीतांश्च बुद्धिः सा पार्थ !तामसी ॥

तस्याः पञ्च गुणा यथा, --“इष्टानिष्टविपत्तिश्च व्यवसायः समाधिता ।संशयः प्रतिपत्तिश्च बुद्धेः पञ्च गुणान् विदुः ॥
”इति महाभारते मोक्षधर्म्मः ।इष्टानिष्टविपत्तिः इष्टानिष्टानां वृत्तिविशेषाणांविपत्तिर्नाशः निद्रारूपा वृत्तिरित्यर्थः । व्यव-सायः उत्साहः । समाधिता चित्तस्थैर्य्यंचित्तवृत्तिनिरोध इत्यर्थः । संशयः कोटिद्बयस्पृक्ज्ञानम् । प्रतिपत्तिः प्रत्यक्षादिप्रमाणवृत्तिः ।इति तट्टीका ॥

तस्याः सप्त गुणा यथा --“शुश्रूषा श्रवणञ्चैव ग्रहणं धारणन्तथा ।ऊहोपोहोऽर्थविज्ञानं तत्त्वज्ञानञ्च धीगुणाः ॥

तस्या वृत्तिः पञ्चधा यथा । प्रमाणम् १ विप-र्य्ययः २ विकल्पः ३ निद्रा ४ स्मृतिः ५ । इतिपातञ्जलम् ॥

बुद्धिक्षयकरा यथा, --“शोकः क्रोधश्च लोभश्च कामो मोहः परासुता ।ईर्ष्या मानो विचिकित्सा कृपासूया जुगुप्सता ॥
द्वादशैते बुद्धिनाशहेतवो मानसा मलाः ।”इति कालिकापुराणे १८ अध्यायः ॥

अपि च ।“बुद्धिक्षयकरा एते माषकासवमृत्तिकाः ॥
”बुद्धिबृद्धिकरा यथा, --“निम्बाटरूषवृन्ताश्च बुद्धिवृद्धिकरा मताः ॥
बुद्धिक्षयकरान्नित्यं त्यजेद्राजा च भोजने ।भोजयेदन्वहं बुद्धिबृद्धिहेतुं नृपोत्तम ! ॥
”इति कालिकापुराणे ८९ अध्यायः ॥

न्यायमते सा विभुगुणः पुनर्द्विविधा अनुभूतिःस्मृतिश्च । यथा, --“विभुर्बुद्ध्यादिगुणवान् बुद्धिस्तु द्विविधा मता ।अनुभूतिः स्मृतिश्च स्यादनुभूतिश्चतुर्विधा ॥
प्रत्यक्षमप्यनुमितिस्तथोपमितिशब्दजे ।”इति भाषापरिच्छेदः ॥
