Dur-ṇāman, ‘of evil name, ’ is the designation in the Rigveda^1
and the Atharvaveda^2 of a demon causing disease, or the
disease itself. The Nirukta^3 explains the words as meaning
a ‘worm, ’ an interpretation which accords with the wide-
spread belief in disease-causing worms.^4 Later Durnāman
denotes ‘hæmorrhoids.’^5

दु(र्णा)र्नामन् स्त्री दुःस्थितं नामास्य पूर्वपदात् संज्ञायां णत्वेप्राप्ते क्षुभ्नादेराकृतिगणत्वात् न णत्वमित्येके बेदे तुणत्वमध्यपाठो दृश्यते । दीर्घकोषिकायां (झिनुक) ख्याते१ पदार्थे अमरः २ अर्शोरोगे च राजनि० तद्रोगस्यातिपा-तकशेषत्वादकीर्तनीयत्वेन निन्दितत्वात् तथात्वम् “अमीवा यस्ते गर्भं दुर्णामा योनिमाशये” ऋ० १० । १६२ । १ ।“कृणोम्यस्मै भेषजं बजं दुर्णामचातनम्” । “दुर्णामाच सुनामा चोभा संवृतमिच्छतः” अथ० ८ । ६ । ३ । वा डाप्दुर्नामा उपधालोपित्वात् पक्षे ङीप् उपधालोपे दुर्नाम्नी
