ता(ट)डका 1 N. of a female fiend, daughter of Suketu, wife of Sunda and mother of Mārīca. [She was changed into a fiend by the sage Agastya whose devotions she had disturbed. She was killed by Rāma when she began to disturb the sacrificial rites of Viśvāmitra. Rāma was first unwilling to bend his bow against a woman, but the sage overcame his scruples, see R. 11. 20].

ताटका / TĀṬAKĀ. A fierce demoness. It was because of a curse of the sage agastya that tāṭakā became a demoness.
There was once a great yakṣa named suketu, a son of Surakṣa. He did penance to propitiate brahmā to get a child and by the blessing of brahmā suketu got a daughter named tāṭakā. brahmā gave her the strength of a thousand elephants. Taṭakā was by nature interested in cruel and violent deeds and doing deeds of magic. She made sunda, son of Jharjha, her husband. She got two sons named mārīca and subāhu. They also became mighty ones great in deeds by magic.
Once sunda attacked the āśrama of agastya in a mood of intoxicated arrogance. sunda was burnt to death in the fire of his fury. tāṭakā coming to know of the death of her husband got angry and attacked the āśrama of agastya with her sons. agastya cursed them and made them into demons. tāṭakā and her sons who immediately turned themselves into fierce-looking demons went first to pātāla with sumālī, father of the demon race and then went with rāvaṇa, King of the demons, to laṅkā and stayed there. With the help of rāvaṇa, tāṭakā conquered the great deep forest near kārūṣa and stayed there with her sons. None, devas, demons or men, dared to step into that forest. Even the Sun or Clouds avoided passing above that forest.
It was at that time that śrī rāma and lakṣmaṇa came to that forest with viśvāmitra. tāṭakā attacked śrī rāma and rāma killed her with one arrow. The heavy body of the demoness fell to the ground like a big mountain. Her soul then rose up as a beautiful gandharva lady and tāṭakā who was thus released from the curse praised śrī rāma and left the place. ता(ट)डका स्त्री । राक्षसीभेदे । तस्या उत्पत्तिकथा रामा०बा० २५ अ० ।“पूर्वमासीन् महायक्षः सुकेतुर्नाम वीर्य्यवान् । अनपत्यःशुभाचारः स च तेपे महत्तपः । पितामहस्तु सुप्रीतस्तस्ययक्षपतेस्तदा । कन्यारत्नं ददौ राम! ताड(ट)कां नामनामतः । ददौ नागसहस्रस्य बलं चास्याः पितामहः ।न त्वेव पुत्रं यक्षाय ददौ चासौ महायशाः ।तान्तु बालां विवर्धन्तीं रूपयौवनशालिनीम् । जम्भपुत्राय सुन्दाय ददौ भार्य्यां यशस्विनीम् । कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य यक्षी पुत्रं व्यजायत । मारीचं नाम दु-र्धर्षं यः शापाद्राक्षसोऽभवत् । सुन्दे तु निहतेराम! अगस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम् । ता(ट)डका सह पुत्रेणप्रधर्षयितुमैच्छत । भक्षार्थं जातसंरम्भा गर्जन्तीसाभ्यधावत । आपतन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा अगस्त्यो भगवा-नृषिः । राक्षसत्वं भजस्वेति मारीचं व्याजहारसः । अगस्त्यः परमामर्षस्ता(ट)डकामपि शप्तवान् ।पुरुषादी महायक्षी विकृता विकृतानना । इदं रूपंविहायाशु दारुणं रूपमस्तु ते । सैषा शापकृता-ऽमर्षा ता(ट)डका क्रोधमूर्च्छिता । देशमुत्सादयत्येनमगस्त्याचरितं शुभम् । एनां राघव । दुर्वृत्तां यक्षींपरमदारुणाम् । गोब्राह्मणहितार्थाय जहि दुष्टपरा-क्रमाम्” । “ताडका चलकपालकुण्डला” रघुः ।“तां ताडकाख्यां निजघान रामः” भट्टिः ।
